What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a MT drivers license? Montana

New Driver Checklist
As a teen, it's important to follow any restrictions regarding your learners permit, drivers permit, or drivers license. You could lose your license for a period of time if you're caught violating Montana traffic laws.

So, with that in mind, be sure to obey the following teen driver restrictions.

MT Driving Permit (TELL) Holders

  • Only drive with a licensed parent or guardian.
  • Make sure everyone in your car wears a seatbelt, no matter where they're sitting.
  • Don't get any traffic violations for alcohol or drug offenses in the six-month period before applying for your first-year restricted drivers license.

MT First-Year Restricted License Holders

  • No driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. except to travel to and from school, church, work, or farm-related activities. (Driving for emergency and specific parent-authorized situations are also permitted.)
  • If you're not accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 18 years old, you can only have one non-family member in the car during the first six months; the limit increases to three non-family members during the second six months.
  • Make sure everyone in your car wears a seatbelt, no matter where they're sitting.
If you're convicted of violating these restrictions, you may serve between 20-60 hours of community service for your first offense. For the second offense, you could face a six-month teen drivers license suspension.

No matter when you obtain your first-year restricted driver license, the restrictions disappear when you turn 18.
