What are the NE driving permit test requirements? Nebraska

Nebraska Learners Permit Test Requirements

The Nebraska Division of Motor Vehicles (NE DMV) mandates that the state’s teen residents take and pass a written permit test and a vision test before they receive their drivers permit.  In addition to taking and passing the written and vision tests, as a teen driver you must complete a driving safety course that is approved by the Nebraska DMV.

You can also practice driving with your parents or legal guardians to receive your driving permit. At the end of the driving training, fill out a driving training certification form to receive your driving permit. The certification form must be signed by your parents, legal guardians or a licensed driver who is 21 years or older. You have to receive at least 50 hours of driving training in order for the certification form to be valid.

Pay the $10.50 fee to receive your LPE learners permit. Base fee for the permit is $8; with the $2.50 security surcharge, the total cost of the permit comes to $10.50. It costs $13.50 to renew or replace a LPE learners permit. School permit fees are set at the same rate as are LPE learners permit fees.

The provisional operators permit (the permit you must be at least 16 years old to get) costs $17.50.

Areas covered on the written examination include:

  • Child restraint systems.
  • How to use turn signals.
  • Defensive driving.
  • Steering.
  • Traffic Signals.
  • Required auto insurance.
You must take and pass the vision screening and the written permit test before you receive a NE learners permit. Study the practice permit test at the back of the drivers manual so you can pass the written test. Should you fail the written tests, you must wait at least 24 hours before you take the test again.

Effective October 1, 2009, each NE resident who applies to receive a drivers license must state that he or she is a citizen of the United States. Naturalized citizens or legal aliens must affirm that they reside in the country legally and that, upon request, they will provide official documentation that confirms this.
