What are the NM driving permit test requirements? New Mexico

New Driver Checklist

Drivers Permit Test Requirements

Before you’re allowed to take the driving permit test, you must:

  • Be at least 15 and have the signatures of your parents if you’re younger than 18.
  • Be enrolled in drivers ed (or have completed the course), if you’re younger than 18.
  • Completed a DWI Awareness Class, if you’re age 18 to 24.
  • Show proof of Social Security number or other verification of legality in the country.
  • Show your birth certificate or other proof of ID.
  • Show proof of residency in NM.
  • Pass the vision test.
Once you have shown these items to the MVD, you will be allowed to take the written test for your learners permit.

The driving permit test is based on all the traffic rules in the New Mexico Drivers Manual. To pass it, you’ll need to know everything in the book. Taking a practice permit test BEFORE you head into the MVD office is a good idea, to make sure you know everything and are comfortable with the test format.

Road Test Requirements

Once you have passed the written test, you’ll need to take a road test to get a drivers license. If you’re younger than 18, you must follow the rules for a graduated license and practice first. If you’re older than 18, then you may go ahead and take the road test whenever you like.

You’ll need to show up in a reliable car that has auto insurance on it before the examiner will give you the test. It’s a good time for new drivers to get quotes on auto insurance.
