What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a NM drivers license? New Mexico
New Mexico Teen Driver License System
To earn an unrestricted drivers license in NM, teens must follow a three-step process that involves certain driving restrictions.Step One: Learners Permit
This instructional drivers permit, which costs $7 and may be tested for as early as age 15, lets you:
- Drive with an adult age 21 or older, who has held his or her license for at least three years.
- You must hold this driving permit for at least six months.
Step Two: Provisional License
Once you’re 15 1/2, you may get a provisional drivers license if you pass the road test.
The restrictions:
- You may not drive without a licensed adult age 21 or older between the hours of 12 a.m. and 5 a.m.
- You may only carry one person younger than age 21, unless you’re driving around immediate family members, such as younger siblings; or there’s a licensed driver age 21 or older in the car with you.
- You must hold this license for at least 12 months.
Step Three: Full Driver License
After 12 months of the provisional license, go to an MVD office and pay for a four-year or eight-year license. There are no restrictions on this license, but you may only get it if you had a clean record during your provisional year.
Fees for the full license are as follows:
- Four-Year License: $18
- Eight-Year License: $34
