Do I need a NC drivers permit before applying for a North Carolina drivers license? North Carolina
NC Drivers Permit
If you are younger than 18, then you must get a learners permit before you will be issued a license. If you are 18 or older, there is no requirement to get a driving permit. However, you will probably want to get one, so you can practice driving before you take the driving test. Some people might have learned how to drive on private property, or have driven earlier and then given up a drivers license, and therefore don’t need to practice much.
In either case, you must pass the written test. Remember to take a practice permit test before making a DMV appointment. If you don’t, the chances are high you’ll fail and have to come back and retake the test. The North Carolina DMV might have a free practice test, or you can purchase one from a drivers ed school online.
Permit Restrictions
Once issued your permit, you must always practice with someone who is licensed to drive for five years or more. This means the person must be at least 21 years old.
Teens must be supervised for the first six months before taking the behind the wheel test. Adults may practice for whatever amount of time they feel they need to prepare for the test to get a drivers license.
