ND Learners Permit Process

Once you’re at least 14 years old:

  1. Study a copy of the North Dakota drivers license manual (available through the NDDOT site).
  2. Take a practice permit test to see if you're sufficiently prepared for the permit test (optional step).
  3. Go to a drivers license office (no appointment required).
  4. Bring acceptable proof of your full name and date of birth (original or certified copies of a birth certificate, state ID, valid U.S. passport, etc.).
  5. Complete a drivers permit application, and have a parent or guardian sign it.
  6. Pass a vision test.
  7. Pay the $5 written test fee.
  8. Pass the written test covering road signs and traffic rules.
  9. Pay the $10 permit fee.
Permits are valid for one year. If you're younger than 18, you must have your permit for at least six months before taking the road test. Drivers ed isn't required to apply for a permit, but it's needed to take the road test if you're younger than 16.
