Replacing and Renewing a Rhode Island Drivers Permit

Rhode Island limited instruction permits are valid one year. If you lose your drivers permit during that time, or if it is damaged or stolen, you can obtain a replacement permit by presenting the following to your local DMV office:

  • Certified birth certificate.
  • Social Security Card.
  • Driver Education Certificate.
  • $11.50 replacement fee.

Renewing an Expired Permit

After holding your driving permit for six months, you can apply for a Rhode Island drivers license. If, on the other hand, you feel the need for additional practice time, you can renew your learners permit by presenting the documents listed above to your local DMV office.

Repeating the Written Knowledge Test

Repetition of the written knowledge test is required at the discretion of the DMV office. In addition to the RI Driver’s Manual, available through RI DMV, a practice permit test is available online through a variety of independent websites such as the Unofficial DMV Guide.

In order to find out ahead of time if you will be required to repeat the knowledge test, contact the following DMV offices:
