South Carolina Drivers Permit

To apply for an SC driving permit you must be at least 15 years old. The application process is straightforward, requiring visiting your local DMV office with:

  • Your birth certificate.
  • Your Social Security card.
  • Proof of SC residency.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • A parent or guardian to sign your application, if you’re younger than 18.
  • Payment to cover the $2 written test fee and $2.50 learners permit fee.
You will also be required, while applying, to pass a vision test.

NOTE: Enrollment in a driver education class is not a learners permit requirement.

Study for Written Permit Test

To obtain a permit, the first step towards earning a South Carolina drivers license, you must pass the written test. All questions are based on information found in the state's drivers manual. This is your main study source. You can grab a copy from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV website.

Next, after studying the manual, take at least one practice permit test. These online tests feature questions almost identical to those found on the actual exam, giving you an accurate reading on whether or not you're test-ready.
