Do I need a SC drivers permit before applying for a South Carolina drivers license? South Carolina

New Driver Checklist

South Carolina Learners Permit

All SC drivers license applicants, regardless of age, must hold a drivers permit.

Apply for a Driving Permit

Visit any DMV office with:

  • Your birth certificate.
  • Your Social Security card.
  • Proof of residency.
  • Proof of vehicle insurance.
  • A parent or guardian, if you’re younger than 18, to sign your drivers permit application.
  • Payment for the $2 written test fee and the $2.50 learners permit fee.
You must, while applying, pass a vision and written test. No appointment necessary.

NOTE: Drivers education is not required to obtain a driving permit.

Prepare for the Written Test

Study the state's drivers manual. All test questions are based on information addressed in the manual, including road sign identification, drinking and driving repercussions, and parking maneuvers. You can snare a copy from any DMV office or by downloading from the DMV website.

Next, take at least one practice permit test. These exams feature similar questions to those found on the actual permit test, giving you an accurate gauge on whether you're test-prepared.
