South Dakota Drivers Permit

Any SD resident 14 and older may apply for a learners permit, the first step towards obtaining a drivers license. To apply for a permit, visit any DPS office and:

  1. Provide proof of name.
  2. Provide proof of age.
  3. Provide proof of Social Security number.
  4. Provide proof of South Dakota residency.
  5. Have parental or guardian consent, if you’re younger than 18.
  6. Pay the $20 driving permit fee.
During the application process you'll also need to pass a vision screening and a written test.

NOTE: Driver education is not required to obtain a driving permit.

Prepare for Written Test

Obtain a drivers manual and study. Every question on the exam is based on information addressed in the manual, including road sign identification, highway driving and turning in intersections. You can grab a copy from any DPS office, or by downloading from the DPS website.

After studying the manual, you'll next want to take at least one practice permit test. These online tests feature questions similar to those found on the actual exam, allowing you to accurately gauge if you're test-prepared.

If you pass the test you'll receive a South Dakota drivers permit, valid for one year.
