New Driver Checklist

SD Drivers Permit and Drivers License

You must be at least 16 to apply for a drivers license. If you're younger than 18 you must hold a learners permit for 180 days, or 90 days if you complete a state-approved driver education course. If you're 18 or older, you must pass the driving permit tests (vision and screening) before you can take the road test.

Apply for South Dakota Drivers Permit

To apply for a permit, visit any DPS office with:

  • Proof of name.
  • Proof of age.
  • Proof of Social Security number.
  • Proof of South Dakota residency.
  • Parental or guardian consent, if you’re younger than 18.
  • Payment for the $20 driving permit fee.

Prepare for Written Test

All of the permit test questions are directly based on information contained in the state's drivers manual. You can grab a copy from any DPS office or by downloading from the DPS website.

After studying the entire manual, you'll next want to gauge if you're test-ready by taking at least one practice permit test. These can be found online and feature questions similar to those on the actual exam.

If you pass the test you'll receive a South Dakota drivers permit, valid for one year.
