Replace or Renew SD Permits

Renew Learners Permit

A South Dakota driving permit is valid for one year. If you're younger than 18 and you allow it to expire you'll be required to apply again for a new drivers permit.

To renew your permit, visit any DPS office with:

  • Proof of identity and age.
  • Proof of Social Security number.
  • Proof of South Dakota residency.
  • Parent or guardian, if you’re younger than 18.
  • Cash or a check to pay the $20 learners permit fee.
You'll also be required to pass a vision screening and a written test.

To prepare for the permit test you'll first need to study the state's drivers license manual. You can obtain a copy from any DPS office or by downloading online.

After studying the manual you should then gauge if you're test-ready by taking at least one practice permit test.

Replace Lost or Stolen Drivers Permit

To obtain a replacement permit, visit any DPS office with:

  • Two proofs of identification, one of which must prove your date of birth.
  • Cash or a check to pay the $10 drivers permit fee.
