What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a SD drivers license? South Dakota

New Driver Checklist

Teen Restrictions for SD Drivers Permit and Drivers License

The South Dakota graduated drivers license system emphasizes safety for teens. It's a system that comes with driving restrictions for each level, limiting dangerous driving situations until behind-the-wheel experience is gained.

Driving Permit Restrictions

  • You must be accompanied in the front seat while driving with someone who is 18 or older and has at least one year of driving experience.
  • You must hold your drivers permit for 180 days (90 days if you enrolled in driver education), before you can take a road test.

Restricted Minor's Permit

This is more of a driver license than a learners permit, with the following restrictions:

  • You can drive alone between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., provided you have the okay of your parents or guardian.
  • You can drive between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. if accompanied in the front seat by a parent or guardian.
Your restricted minor's permit automatically upgrades to an unrestricted operator license upon turning 18, provided you did not receive any traffic violations during the six months prior.
