TN Drivers Permit Process

Once you’re at least 15 years old:

  1. Study the TN drivers license manual.
  2. Go to a drivers service center (no appointment is required).
  3. Bring acceptable primary and secondary identification documents.
  4. Bring acceptable proof of U.S. citizenship or authorized stay.
  5. Bring two acceptable proofs of residency.
  6. Provide your Social Security number (or affidavit saying you haven't been issued one).
  7. Show proof of school attendance/progress (if younger than 18).
  8. Have a parent or guardian sign a minor/teenage affidavit and financial responsibility form (if younger than 18).
  9. Pass a vision test.
  10. Pass a knowledge test.
  11. Pay the $10.50 permit fee.

Practice Permit Test


To enhance your chances of passing the written test on your first try, take a practice permit test or two. These tests are available online through numerous sources.

You'll need to accumulate at least 50 hours of driving education time (behind-the-wheel experience) before trying for your intermediate driver license.
