UT Learners Permit Procedure

Once you’re at least 15 years old:

  1. Study the Utah drivers handbook.
  2. Visit the DPS and bring along a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult who will sign the application (if you're younger than 18).
  3. Show acceptable proofs of identity, legal presence, and Social Security number (or ITIN).
  4. Show two proofs of Utah residence (if different than what appears on your current Utah record) or proof of your name change (if this applies).
  5. Complete the driving permit application.
  6. Pass a brief medical screening.
  7. Pass a vision test.
  8. Pass a knowledge test.
  9. Pay the $15 permit fee.

Take a Permit Practice Test

Before going to the DPS office, give yourself a better chance of passing the written exam by taking a permit practice test or two. You can find these practice tests through various sources online.
