Do I need a UT drivers permit before applying for a Utah drivers license? Utah

New Driver Checklist
Have you ever held a drivers license - even if it's from another state? If so, you won't need to get a drivers permit before obtaining your Utah license.

However, if you've never been issued a drivers license, you must first get a Utah learners permit before applying for your license. And, this holds true no matter if you're a teen, senior citizen, or any age in between.

Now, if you're 18 or older, you don't need to be a permit holder for a minimum time period before trying for your license. Those younger than this must keep the permit for at least six months - or until they turn 18 - before taking the road test.

Prepare With a Practice Permit Test

If you must go through the permit process, you'll need to pass a knowledge test. The test consists of questions based on information found in the UT DPS drivers handbook.

After studying the manual, it's wise to take a practice permit test so you can see how prepared you are for the official exam, and see which areas you might need to study more.
