New Driver Checklist

VT Permit Test Requirements

You must be at least 15 years old to take the permit test. All Vermont drivers license applicants must take and pass the written test, regardless of age.

The DMV recommends setting a test appointment with Central Scheduling by calling (802) 828-2085. Or, you can send an E-mail with the following information:

  • Your full name.
  • Date of birth.
  • Your Vermont personal identification (PID), if available.
  • Your phone number.
  • Type of test (written, vision, road).
  • Area/location where you want to be tested.
  • Approximate date and time that best suits your schedule.
The DMV will then contact you with a test date and time for your driving permit. Walk-ins are accepted, but only if this schedule allows.

What to Bring to Drivers Permit Test

When you arrive at the DMV to take the test you will first need to provide the following:

  • Proof of Vermont residency.
  • Proof of identity.
  • Proof of date and place of birth.
  • A completed application. It must be signed by a parent or guardian if you're 15, 16, or 17 years old. Application can be downloaded from the DMV website.
  • Payment for the $17 learner permit fee and the $28 written test fee.

Taking the Learners Permit Test

The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 16 correctly to pass. If you fail, you must wait at least one day before trying again.

Preparing for the Driving Permit Test

All questions on the test are based on information addressed in the state's drivers manual, including road sign identification, space management, and auto insurance responsibilities. The manual rates as your top study source. You can obtain a copy from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV website.

Next, you'll want to take at least one online practice permit test. All questions are similar to those found on the actual permit exam. Permit practice tests flourish online, allowing you to take as many as needed until you feel test-ready.
