VT Teens and Drivers Permit and Drivers License Restrictions
Each level of the Vermont graduated drivers license program comes with driving restrictions. The intent is not to penalize but to promote teen driving safety.Driving Permit Restrictions
You may only drive while accompanied in the front seat with:
- A licensed and unimpaired parent or guardian.
- A licensed or certified and unimpaired driver education instructor.
- A licensed and unimpaired person who is at least 25 years old.
Junior Operator License (JOL) Restrictions
- You cannot drive with passengers during the first three months of holding this driver license. This restriction is lifted if accompanied by a licensed parent or guardian, or a licensed or certified unimpaired driving instructor, or a licensed and unimpaired person who is at least 25 years old and sitting in the front seat.
- During the second three months of holding a JOL you're allowed to transport family members.
- All passenger restrictions are lifted after six months of holding a JOL. But you cannot transport more passengers than there are seat belts.
- You cannot drive for job purposes during the first year of holding a junior operator license. This applies towards delivery jobs, for example.
- You cannot carry any passengers for hire.
