Washington Learners Permit

You must be at least 15 years old to apply for a Washington driving permit. The Department of Licensing (DOL) will allow you to apply at 15, but only if you're enrolled in a driver education program and you apply no more than 10 days before the class begins. Otherwise, you must wait until you're 15 1/2 or older to submit a drivers permit application.

When applying you must take and pass the state's written test only if you're NOT enrolled in a driver ed class

Apply for a WA Driving Permit

To apply, visit any DOL office with:

  • Proof of identity.
  • A completed Parental Authorization Affidavit, if you’re younger than 18. Parents must provide proof of their identity and relationship to you.
  • A driving permit application signed by your instructor, if enrolled in a driver ed class.
  • Cash or a check to pay the $20 learners permit fee.
You'll also need to pass a vision screening and, if required, a written test.

A permit is valid for one year.

Preparing for the Permit Test

You'll need to study the state's drivers license manual to prepare for the exam. All questions are based on information found in the manual. You can grab a copy from any DOL office, or by downloading from the DOL website.

After studying the manual from start to finish, you'll next want to take a practice permit test. These online exams feature questions similar to those found on the actual test, providing an accurate gauge if you're test ready.

No appointment is needed to take the written test.
