Washington Permit Test Requirements

You must be at least 15 1/2 years old to take the learners permit test. The driving permit exam consists of 25 questions. You must answer at least 20 correctly to pass.

No appointment is required. All tests are given on a walk-in basis at DOL offices. You must, however, arrive at least 30 minutes before the office closes.

If you fail on your first attempt, you can test again in four hours. If you fail a second time you must wait at least one day before testing again. Each test attempt costs $20.

Every applicant, regardless of age, must pass the test for the drivers permit before applying for a drivers license.  

Study for the WA Permit Test

All questions are derived from information found in the state's drivers manual. Study every topic in the manual, including traffic sign identification, auto insurance responsibilities, and space management. You can obtain a copy from any DOL office or by downloading from the DOL website.
