Replace or Renew a Washington Learners Permit

Replace WA Driving Permit

If your drivers permit is lost or stolen you'll need to apply for a replacement permit as quickly as possible. To do so visit any DOL office with:

  • Proof of identification.
  • Cash or a check to pay the $15 drivers permit replacement fee.
  • A completed Parental Authorization Affidavit, if you’re younger than 18.
You'll receive a temporary learners permit at the DOL office. Use this for driving until your permanent drivers permit arrives in the mail in about 10 days.

You may also order a replacement learners permit online, from the DOL website, but only if you meet the following requirements:

  • You're 18 or older.
  • You had your photo on your permit.
  • You have a credit card (American Express, Visa, MasterCard) to pay the $15 duplicate fee.
Your new driving permit should arrive in the mail in about 10 days.

Renew WA Drivers Permit

Permits are valid for one year. The DOL allows for one renewal. You'll need to renew your permit before applying for a drivers license.

To apply, visit any DOL office with:

  • Proper identification.
  • Cash or a check to pay the $20 learners permit renewal fee.
  • A completed Parental Authorization Affidavit, if you’re younger than 18.
If your permit has been expired for less than two years you do not have to take the written test again. If it has been more than two years you'll have to prepare for the 25-question test by studying the state's drivers manual. You can obtain a copy from any DOL office, or by downloading from the DOL website.

After studying the manual you'll also want to take at least one practice permit test. These can be found online from a variety of different websites.
