What are the WI driving permit test requirements? Wisconsin

New Driver Checklist

Wisconsin Permit Test Requirements

In order to earn a driving permit in Wisconsin, you will need to complete the following permit tests:

  • A vision screening.
  • A traffic sign identification test.
  • A written knowledge test.
The purpose of the vision screening is to determine if you can see well enough to drive safely.

The traffic sign identification test and written knowledge test are both multiple-choice exams. You can prepare for these tests by studying the driver handbook published by the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (WI DMV). This handbook also contains a number of practice permit test questions.

Additional Driving Permit Requirements

In addition to completing all testing requirements, applicants for a learners permit must provide proof of identity, name, date of birth, legal presence in the United States, and a Social Security number.

If you are older than 18, you will need to provide proof of Wisconsin residency.

If you are younger than 18, you will need to provide:

  • Consent from a parent, guardian, or adult sponsor.
  • Proof of school enrollment or a receipt of a high school diploma/GED.
  • Evidence of enrollment in a driver education program, with the first lesson conducted within 60 days of getting your drivers permit.
There is a $35 fee to receive an instruction permit. Your driving permit will be valid for 12 months and may be renewed once if needed. You must hold the permit for at least six months before you can get a probationary license if you are younger than 18 years old.

If you are 18 years old or older, you must have a drivers permit for seven days before applying for a probationary Wisconsin drivers license. At this point, you’ll need to make sure you have a vehicle with proper auto insurance for the road test.
