What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a WI drivers license? Wisconsin

New Driver Checklist

WI Driving Permit and Probationary License Restrictions

Under the rules of the Wisconsin Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, a drivers permit allows you to drive only when supervised by a licensed driver.

After you move from a learners permit to a probationary license, you’re allowed to drive alone, but there are still a number of driving restrictions in place.

For example, during the entire time you have your probationary license, you must maintain absolute sobriety while driving. You must also wear your seatbelt at all times.

You will have the following teen driver restrictions for the first nine months, although they can be extended if you get a traffic ticket, have your license revoked, or are found guilty of violating them during the initial nine-month period:

  • You are not allowed to drive between midnight to 5 a.m., unless traveling to school or work.
  • You may have only one passenger aside from immediate family or a qualified adult.

A Word About Traffic Convictions

When you have a probationary license, you will need to be very careful to obey all Wisconsin traffic laws.

After your first conviction, demerit points double for any subsequent moving traffic convictions. If you accumulate 12 or more points within a 12-month period, the WI Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will suspend your license for six months.

Getting an Unrestricted Driver License

In order to receive a drivers license with no restrictions, teens must be at least 19 and have held a probationary driver license until the first renewal date. Generally, this is for two to three years.

New Wisconsin residents who are least 21 years old with a valid out-of-state license and at least three years of driving experience can automatically obtain an unrestricted driver license.
