A driving permit will expire after one year, but may be renewed. And, you can't apply for your permit if you owe the District of Columbia any debts.

District of Columbia Learners Permit Process
- Study the drivers license manual.
- Take a practice permit test to reinforce the information (optional).
- Visit a DMV service location.
- Bring acceptable proofs of name, date of birth, and DC residency (see the DMV site for document lists).
- Have a photocopy of a parental or legal guardian drivers license or non-drivers ID card (if you're 16 or 17).
- Take a notarized parental consent form or notarized letter indicating consent to apply for a learners permit (if you're 16 or 17).
- Complete a learner permit application.
- Pass a vision test.
- Pass a knowledge test.
- Get your photo taken.
- Pay the $20 permit fee.
