To begin, you must be at least 16 years to take the knowledge test and get your learners permit.Appointments
You don't need an appointment to take the test for your drivers permit (that includes the required vision test) as it's done on a walk-in basis.
Vision and Knowledge Test
If you fail the vision test, you'll need to provide an Eye Report (from your eye doctor) to the DMV. And, of course, your vision must still be adequate enough to safely drive.
With the written test, you have the option to take it in an audio or touch-screen format. No matter how you take the exam, though, you must answer at least 15 of the 20 questions correctly to pass.
This test consists of questions about motor vehicle laws, traffic rules, and safe driving standards. You must finish the test within 50 minutes.
Test Failures
You can re-take the written test up to three times within a 12-month period.
Many people boost their chances of success by taking a practice permit test or two; you can find these tests through various sources online.
Auto Insurance
You don't need to worry about providing proof of auto insurance coverage when trying for your District of Columbia driving permit. In fact, most permit drivers are still covered under another person's policy until they get a drivers license and then their own vehicle.
