What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a DC drivers license? Washington DC

New Driver Checklist
Teens need to develop their driving skills. So, District of Columbia officials structured a system that's meant to give teen drivers the support they need while still allowing them to drive.

Here are the applicable driving restrictions for those with a learners permit and a provisional drivers license.

Washington DC Drivers Permit Restrictions

You may only drive between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. You must always have a fully licensed driver who's at least 21 sitting in the front passenger seat supervising you.

Additionally, you can't use a cell phone or other electronic device while driving. You can't drive a car for money (for example, pizza delivery). And, everyone in the vehicle you're driving must be wearing a seatbelt.

Washington DC Provisional License Restrictions

You may drive by yourself, but if you have a passenger, that person must be a currently licensed driver aged 21 or older who is sitting in the front passenger seat. You may also drive with your parents or siblings.

You're allowed to drive between 6 a.m. and midnight (or 11 p.m. depending on the day and time of year). Plus, you may drive to and from work, school activities, and religious or sports events, and a few other activities outside those hours. The DMV site contains the complete list of allowances.
