When Your Employer Gets Notified

No, your employer does not get notified when you get into an accident unless you were driving a company vehicle.  Your employer can, however, learn of your accident should they obtain a copy of your driving record in the future.

Ongoing Checks

Many employers include driving records as part of pre-employment screening, especially if the job requires driving or use of a company vehicle.  But usually, once an applicant gets hired, they are no longer subject to background screening.  There are exceptions, such as certain government, police enforcement and security positions or when the employer feels ongoing background checks are necessary to reduce risk.

If you’ve gotten into a car accident and your employer does not conduct ongoing background checks, it is unlikely your employer will ever discover the accident.  However, if your employer does conduct a driving record check in the future, they will become aware of your accident.  The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires that an employer obtain your written permission before conducting any background check, so you can always deny their request to obtain your driving record.  But remember, denying an employer access to your background information can result in job termination.

Review Your Record

If you’re concerned about what your current employer may find on your driving record, you can order your driving record online today, and make sure you’re prepared for your next background screening.
