Car Insurance Requirements for an AL Driver License

According to the Alabama DPS, first-time drivers in the state of Alabama must pass a driving test in order to obtain an AL drivers license. Prior to taking the driving test, you must present proof of auto insurance and registration for the vehicle you are testing in.

Minimum Insurance Required

The minimum insurance requirements in Alabama are as follows:

  • $25,000 person injury liability insurance.
  • $50,000 total injury insurance per accident.
  • $25,000 property damage coverage per accident.

Insurance Rates

In addition to the insurance rates published by the Alabama Department of Insurance, insurance quotes are available both online and in person from numerous car insurance providers. You can contact the Department of Insurance at the following address.

Proof of Insurance

Alabama law requires you to carry proof of auto insurance at all times when operating a motor vehicle. Acceptable documents include:

  • Auto insurance card.
  • Premium receipt.
  • Insurance binder, declarations page, or certificate of liability.
  • Motor Vehicle Liability Bond (copies accepted).
  • Certificate of Cash Bond (copies accepted).
If the vehicle is rented, a copy of your renter’s agreement will suffice. An expired insurance card is considered valid proof of insurance for 60 days after the expiration date.

Penalties for Uninsured Driving

It is against Alabama law to operate a motor vehicle without insurance. Your first offense will cost you a reinstatement fee of $100. Your second offense will result in a four-month suspension of your registration, and a reinstatement fee of $200. Failing to obtain car insurance could result in additional fees, and potential drivers license suspension.
