AL Drivers License Test Requirements

All first-time drivers in the state of Alabama must pass a written test, a driving road test, and a vision exam in order to obtain an AL drivers license. Tests are given by appointment only at AL drivers license offices. Contact the Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS) for a list of offices near you.

Manuals and Practice Tests


The Alabama Driver Manual is available for download on the DPS website, or by contacting the DPS directly. In addition, a seven-question practice test is available online through the Unofficial DMV Guide. Practice tests of 50 and 100 questions are also available for a small fee.

AL Driving Test Fees


In addition to the $23.50 license fee, you will have to pay a $5 testing fee. If you fail the test, you must pay another $5 to repeat it.

Required Documents


Prior to taking the test, you must submit the following required documents:

  • Two forms of identification, to include one picture ID.
  • Social Security card.
  • Proof of auto insurance and vehicle registration.
  • Proof of school enrollment or school completion, if you are younger than 19.
  • Valid passport, visa, and alien registration card, if you are not a U.S. citizen.
  • Proof of authorized presence in the U.S. for 160 days or more, if you are not a U.S. citizen
