AL Driver License Fees

According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS), the fee for an Alabama drivers license is $23.50, in addition to a $5 test fee. If you fail the test the first time, you must pay another $5 to repeat it.

Renewal Fees


The fee to renew your license is $23.50. You do not have repeat the written or road skills test, unless your license has been expired for more than three years.

Transfer Fees


The fees for transferring an out-of-state license include the $23.50 license fee, and a $5 transfer fee. The DPS does not require former out-of-state drivers to take a driving test, unless your license has been expired for more than one year.

Reinstatement Fees


The fees to reinstate an Alabama license are as follows:

  • $100 reinstatement fee for a suspended or canceled license.
  • $175 reinstatement fee for a revoked license.
  • $275 additional fee for alcohol or drug related offenses.
  • $50 penalty fee for failure to surrender a suspended license within 30 days.
