New Driver Checklist

AL Driver Training Requirements

According to the Alabama graduated driver license program, new drivers younger than 18 must complete an approved drivers education course, or 30 hours of supervised driving time, prior to applying for an unrestricted drivers license. For a list of approved drivers ed courses in your area, contact the Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Schedule a License Test Appointment

After completing the driver training course, or 30 hours of supervised drive time, make an appointment with your local drivers license office to take the required driving test.

In addition to the Alabama Driver Manual, available through the AL DPS, a free, seven-question practice test is available online through the Unofficial DVM Guide. Practice tests of 50 and 100 questions are also available for a small fee of $10 to $15.

Required Documents

Prior to taking the test, you must submit proof of completion of the drivers ed program, or documented drive time, in addition to the following documents and fees:

  • Two forms of I.D., to include one picture ID.
  • Social Security card.
  • Proof of school enrollment or school completion.
  • Proof vehicle insurance and registration.
  • $23.50 license fee.
  • $5 test fee.
A complete list of accepted ID documents is available for download on the DPS website.
