For appointments in Birmingham, contact the Birmingham office directly.

For appointments at all other driver license branches, contact the Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Test Preparation

In addition to the Alabama Driver Manual, available for download on the DPS website, a free, seven-question practice test is available online through the Unofficial DMV Guide. Practice tests of 50 and 100 questions are also available for a small fee of $10 to $15.

Required Documents and Fees

Prior to taking the driving test, you must submit the following to your local drivers license office:

  • Two forms of identification, to include one picture ID.
  • Your Social Security card.
  • Proof of vehicle insurance and registration.
  • Proof of school enrollment, if you’re younger than 19.
  • Proof of completion of 30 hours of driving time, or completion of an approved drivers education course, if you are a new driver younger than 18.
  • $23.50 license fee.
  • $5 test fee.

After the Test

If you fail the test the first time, you must make an appointment to repeat it.

After passing the driving test, a DPS official will take your picture and issue you a temporary drivers license. You permanent license will come in the mail within 30 days, and is valid for up to four years.
