New Driver Checklist

Alaska Drivers License and Auto Insurance

Alaska’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) mandates that each motor vehicle in the state have a minimum amount of auto insurance coverage. Whether you are learning to drive or have your regular drivers license, you are required to have car insurance on the motor vehicle that you operate.

You must have at least:

  • $50,000 of liability insurance to cover the injury or death to one person you are involved in a traffic accident with.
  • $100,000 to cover two or more people who are injured or killed during a traffic accident that you are involved in.
  • $25,000 or more of property damage insurance.
Before you take the driving portion of the drivers license test, you must provide proof of auto insurance to the DMV. If you apply for your drivers license in person, bring a copy of your current auto insurance card with you to the office.

Alaska (AK) residents who live in rural areas will include their auto insurance policy number and expiration dates on their driver license application that they will mail into the DMV office at:

Division of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 229
Haines, AK  99827-0229
