It all depends on which service you use. If you use an online service, you should receive a thorough criminal check on the same day, sometimes instantaneously. If you apply by mail, most services will mail you a criminal record report on the same day the request was received, thus taking anywhere from two to five days.

You can find a wealth of criminal background check services on the Internet. Or, if you prefer, check with your state's Attorney General. Many Attorney General Web sites offer criminal record reports as well. However, if you order a criminal check through the mail, it could take up to several weeks.

Before ordering, make sure you know what you're receiving. There are different criminal checks available: County Criminal, Federal Criminal, Statewide Criminal, National Wants and Warrants, and Sex Offender Registry Check. County Criminal is the most requested check, providing felony listings and sometimes misdemeanor or infraction information.

Also, know whom you're ordering from. Be aware of services that claim direct direct access to your state's criminal history repository. Not all state's allow direct access to this information. Do some research before ordering.
