How do I apply for an AZ drivers license if I am 18 or older? Arizona

New Driver Checklist
First-time teen drivers must follow the steps outlined in the Arizona Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, but residents age 18 or older do not have to obtain their license under this system.

Applying for an AZ Driver License

First-time adult drivers must complete the following steps to earn their Arizona driver license:

  1. Show two documents proving identity, including one with a current photo.
  2. Complete a vision screening.
  3. Complete a written exam.
  4. Complete a driving test.
  5. Pay the appropriate license fee, based on your age at the time of licensing.
Once issued, an Arizona drivers license does not expire until age 65. You are required to update your license with a new photo and complete a vision screening every 12 years, however.

Preparing for Your License Test

The best way to prepare for the written exam is to review a copy of the driver handbook published by the AZ Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). This handbook covers all of the topics that may be on your test, in addition to providing practice test questions to help you study.

You can also find additional practice test questions through various third-party websites, although some sites may charge a fee for accessing their study materials.

Drivers ed and driver training programs are not required for adult first-time drivers, you may still want to consider enrolling in a private driver education program. Practicing driving with an experienced instructor under a variety of traffic and weather conditions is the best way to build your skills and ensure that you can safely operate a motor vehicle. The more behind-the-wheel practice you have, the better prepared you will be to ace your driving test.
