Do I need auto insurance to apply for an AZ drivers license? Arizona

New Driver Checklist

Arizona Auto Insurance Requirements

Arizona requires that all drivers maintain adequate insurance coverage to provide protection against injuries or property damage that may occur as the result of an auto accident. Minimum car insurance requirements for the state of Arizona are as follows:

  • $15,000 bodily injury coverage for one person in one accident.
  • $30,000 bodily injury coverage total per accident.
  • $10,000 property damage coverage per accident.
Please keep in mind that this is only the minimum amount of auto insurance that is required. Depending upon the type of vehicle you drive and your financial assets, you may decide to obtain a more comprehensive insurance policy. Get several insurance quotes to make sure you're getting the most competitive insurance rates possible.

If you own 10 or more vehicles, you can choose to obtain a certificate of self-insurance as an alternative to purchasing a traditional auto policy. This requires completion of a formal application and posting of a surety bond of one million dollars.

Penalties for No Car Insurance

The AZ Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) takes proof of insurance requirements very seriously. All insurance companies are required to notify the department about new policies, renewals, and cancellations.

If you let your coverage lapse or get canceled, the MVD will produce an automatic inquiry. If you can't show adequate proof of insurance at this time, your vehicle registration and possibly your drivers license may be suspended. To clear a suspension, you will need to either provide proof of insurance for the time of the coverage lapse or submit an SR-22 form and pay a $50 driver license reinstatement fee.
