Apply for a Colorado Driver License as a Teen Driver
Before you can apply for a CO drivers license you must be at least 16 years old and own a learners permit. Depending on age you may apply for one of the three following permits:- Driver Education Permit: For teens between 15 and 15 years and six months old.
- Driver Awareness Permit: For teens between 15 years and six months to 16 years old.
- Minor Instruction Permit: For driver license applicants 16 to 21 years old.
The Driver Education Permit
Visit any DMV office with:
- A completed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship.
- A completed Affidavit of Completion of a Drivers Education Classroom Course.
- Proof of your Social Security number.
- Proof of lawful presence.
- Proof of age and identity.
- Proof of Colorado residency.
- Cash or a check to pay the $14 drivers permit fee.
The learners permit is valid for three years. You must hold it for a minimum of 12 months before applying for a CO drivers license.
The Driver Awareness Permit
Visit your local DMV office with:
- A completed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship.
- Proof of completing a four-hour Driver Awareness Program if you did not complete a drivers ed course.
- Proof of your Social Security number.
- Proof of lawful presence.
- Proof of age and identity.
- Proof of Colorado residency.
- Cash or a check to pay the $14 drivers permit fee.
The Minor Instruction Permit
Visit any CO DMV office and bring with you:
- A completed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship, if you're younger than18.
- Proof of your Social Security number.
- Proof of lawful presence.
- Proof of age and identity.
- Proof of Colorado residency.
- Cash or a check to pay the $14 drivers permit fee.
NOTE: No proof of driver training required.
Prepare for Written License Test
Study the state's drivers manual. All of the test questions are based on information found in the manual, including drinking and driving, road signs and passing procedures. You can snare a copy from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV's website.Next, take a permit practice test. These can be found online and feature questions similar to those found on the state's actual exam, allowing you to gauge if you're test-ready.
Apply for a Colorado Driver License
When you're eligible to apply for your drivers license, contact the DMV for a driving test appointment. On the day of the exam be sure to arrive on time and bring:- Your learners permit.
- A completed and signed Time Log Sheet, if you’re younger than 18.
- A working vehicle with proof of auto insurance and vehicle registration.
- Cash or a check to pay the $21 driver license fee.
