Drivers Ed for a Colorado Drivers License
Drivers education requirements are contingent upon age.Only driver license applicants younger than 16 are required to enroll in a drivers ed or driver training course. The course or program must be sanctioned by the DMV. Completion certificates from schools not recognized by the DMV will not be honored, requiring you to re-enroll in an approved program.
Driver Education Permit (Ages 15 - 15 years and 6 months)
Driver ed from a DMV-approved course is required.
Driver's Awareness Permit (Ages 15 years and 6 months - 16)
You must complete either a DMV-approved 30-hour drivers education classroom study course or a four-hour Driver Awareness Program.
Minor Instruction Permit (Ages 16 - 21)
No drivers education or driver training required.
Taking the CO Driving Test
You will need to pass the state's license test to receive a drivers license. Before arranging a test date with the DMV be sure you're prepared. Get as much driving experience as possible for all situations, including highway driving, parallel parking, and turning at light-controlled intersections. You should also consider taking an online practice test.On the day of your license test, be sure to arrive on time and with:
- Your permit.
- A working vehicle that's legally registered and insured.
- A 50-hour Driving Log, if you’re younger than 18.
- Payment for the $21 driver license fee.
