How do I apply for a DE drivers license if I am younger than 18? Delaware
Driver License Program for Teens
Delaware observes a graduated licensing program for teens younger than 18. If you’re a teen, you may apply for a drivers permit if:- You’re at least 16.
- You have completed drivers education.
- You have passed the written and road test, which is administered by your drivers ed teacher.
- Your birth certificate or other document of identity, such as a passport.
- Your parent, guardian, or sponsor (such as an employer) to sign your application.
- Proof of passing driver training.
- The $25 fee, which covers the permit and drivers license.
This Level One Learners Permit is good for six months. You’ll need to practice for at least 50 hours with a licensed driver age 25 or older.
After Six Months: Level Two Permit
After six months of practice, your parent or sponsor must turn in your practice certification to the Department of Education. Then your drivers permit gets upgraded and you are allowed to drive alone between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. with a single passenger.
You may drive with a licensed person age 25 or older between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., unless you have official business such as a school activity or work; then you may drive solo.
After One Year: Class D
Six months after you have had some limited solo practice and a full year after you first got your permit, you will be issued a regular drivers license. You must be at least 17.
New-to-State Teens
If you’re new to Delaware and between 16 and 18 with a license from another state, you’ll have to pass the written test and driving test at the DMV. Be sure to study the manual and take a permit practice test first.Note that:
- The fee is $25, which covers the road test and license test.
- If your out-of-state license was obtained more than 18 months ago, you may get a Class D license.
- If you’ve only had your license for fewer than 12 months, then you can get the Level One Learners Permit.
