Moving to Delaware

60 days after your relocation, you must turn in your old state drivers license and get a new DE driver license. You must go to one of these DMV stations:

  • Georgetown
  • New Castle
  • Dover
Luckily, Delaware generally does not require that you take the written license test or road test. The exceptions to this rule are:

  • You’re a new resident from another country. Delaware requires all drivers (except from Germany or France) relocating from other countries to take these tests. You may keep your foreign license.
  • Your old license is expired. Bring in a printout of your old driving record and be ready to take the written test, and perhaps the driving test, too.

Getting the New Driver License

  • Look at the online wait time page on the Delaware DMV website to see what the least busy times are to visit the DMV. Most do not make appointments.
  • Bring in your old license plus your Social Security card and two proof of residency.
  • Pay $25.
  • Take the vision test.
  • Take the written and road test, if applicable.
If you’re worried about passing the written test, try taking a practice test first. This multiple-choice exam covers the drivers manual and can be bought from various online drivers ed retailers for a small fee.
