Do I need auto insurance to apply for a DE drivers license? Delaware

New Driver Checklist

Getting a DE Drivers License

You do not need auto insurance to obtain a driver license in Delaware. However, when you take the driving test, you’ll have to show proof of auto insurance to the DMV before you take the test.

You’ll also need car insurance to register a car.

Getting Insurance Quotes

Call a licensed DE insurance agent to get insurance rates for the state. You’ll need to get the minimum required:

  • $15,000 for bodily injury to one person.
  • $10,000 for property damage.
  • $30,000 for bodily injury to two or more people.
In addition, you should get insurance to cover your assets beyond what is required. The minimum amounts may not cover your accident. For example, if you cause more than $10,000 worth of property damage, the injured party could gain your other assets, like real estate.
