Do I have to take a license test or driving test to obtain a DE drivers license? Delaware

New Driver Checklist

Driver License Tests for DE

In some circumstances, you’ll need to take both the written license test and driving test to get a Delaware drivers license.

You will have to take these tests if you:

  • Are new to driving.
  • Are from a foreign country, excluding France or Germany, which has reciprocity with Delaware.
  • Have an expired license from another state.
If you are from another state and have a valid driver license, then these exams are usually waived.

Tips for Passing the DMV Tests

  • Study the Drivers Manual.
  • Take a practice test. DE DMV website has a free 10 questions practice test. You can also buy an additional practice tests from a drivers education company online. These have the same info on them as the regular test, but are longer and test on more of the material.
  • Take drivers education to learn how to drive properly and practice driving to pass the driving test. Contact the DMV to ask what days the road test is given; no appointment is necessary, but sometimes they’re canceled due to inclement weather.
