Do I need auto insurance to apply for a HI drivers license? Hawaii

New Driver Checklist

Auto Insurance in Hawaii

You don’t need car insurance to get a HI driver license. The car you drive must be insured, however, whether or not it belongs to you.

You also must show valid car insurance before you take the road test to get a new drivers license, so you can prove your car is insured.

About Hawaii Insurance Rates

Hawaii insurance rates tend to be higher than they are on the mainland. There are a few reasons for this.

First, everything from electricity to taxes in Hawaii tends to be more expensive than on the mainland. Second, Hawaii is a no-fault insurance state, meaning that is someone hits you, your own insurance will pay, not the driver at-fault. Only if there are serious injuries can you sue or be sued.

Also, the state requires that you purchase HI insurance in the minimum liability amounts; you cannot buy a bond or leave a deposit instead.

The minimum amounts you must buy are:

  • $20,000/40,000 Bodily Injury Liability
  • $10,000 Personal Injury Protection
  • $10,000 Property Damage Liability
  • $20,000/40,000 Underinsured Motorist (optional)
  • $20,000/40,000 Uninsured Motorist (optional)
