Do I have to take drivers ed or driver training to get a Hawaii driver license? Hawaii

New Driver Checklist

Drivers Ed in Hawaii

Under Age 18

If you’re under age 18, then you must take and pass a drivers education class before attempting to take the driving test. You may take this class after you pass the written test and get a permit.

You’ll need to show proof of completion before you take the driving test to get a driver license.

Age 18 and Up

If you’re older than 18, you don’t need to take driver training to get a drivers license. However, it would be a good idea. Driver training will help you pass the license test and make you a safer driver.

Passing the Written Test

  • Before you make an appointment for your test, you’ll need to study for the written test.
  • Read the HI Drivers Manual. Buy this for $5 at a bookstore or at the DMV, or check it out from the library.
  • Take a practice test. Buy one online from a drivers ed company, looking for one that has 50 to 100 questions.
  • If you fail the written test, you must wait a week, then return to re-try. A little bit of preparation can save you a lot of time.
