Do I have to take drivers ed or driver training to get an Idaho driver license? Idaho
Idaho Driver Training Requirements
You’re only required to take driver training if you’re younger than 17.Per its Graduated Drivers License (GDL) program, Idaho requires all eligible teen drivers (those who are at least 14 1/2 years old) younger than 17 to enroll in, and pass, a drivers education program. This drivers ed program must be approved by the state and must provide:
- 30 hours of classroom instruction.
- Six hours of observation from inside the vehicle.
- Six hours of actual behind-the-wheel driver training.
Public schools are required to have the class last 30 days; private schools and commercial courses have no days-long restriction.
Drivers ed might seem like a pain, but the course significantly prepares you for the written license test and driving test you’ll have to take once it’s time to get your permit or drivers license.
Drivers Education Requirements for New-to-State Teens
If you’re younger than 17 and completed a driver training course in your old state, chances are you won’t have to take another one in Idaho. Just be sure to contact a driver license official at the ID DMV to confirm that your old state’s program meets Idaho standards. However, no matter what kind of course you took or how old you are, if you need to get an Idaho permit or license, you will have to take the written license test. If drivers ed isn’t in your future, your best bet for passing is to study the state’s driver handbook (available for download from the ID DMV website) and take a practice test or two.
