How do I apply for an IA drivers license if I am 18 or older? Iowa

New Driver Checklist

Iowa Drivers License Requirements (18 or Older)

To apply for an IA drivers license, visit your local DOT office with:

  • Your Social Security number.
  • Proof of IA residency.
  • Proof of identity.
  • Cash or a check to pay the $20 driver license fee (credit and debit cards are not accepted).
While applying, you'll also need to pass a vision test and a knowledge test.

To prepare for the knowledge test, study the state's drivers manual. All test questions are directly based on information covered in the manual, including passing, parking, and road sign identification. You can download a copy from the DOT website, or grab a hardcopy from any DOT office.

You'll also want to take at least one practice test. These can be found online and feature questions similar to those on the actual exam, allowing you to assess if you're test-prepared.

Pass both tests, and you'll become eligible for a driving test.

Take the Driving Test

Visit your local DMV office. Some locations require license test appointments, while most others operate on a first-come-first-serve basis.

When you arrive, have with you:

  • A working vehicle with proof of valid registration (have registration receipt at the ready).
  • Proof of valid car insurance.
  • A licensed driver.
If you pass you'll be issued a temporary drivers license until your permanent one arrives in the mail.
