Iowa License Renewal for an Expired License

Once the expiration date of your IA drivers license passes, you'll have a 60-day grace period, allowing you to legally drive. After your grace period expires, you'll still be able to renew your license up to one year without additional testing.

If you're planning to drive out of state during your 60-day grace period, the DOT strongly advises to renew before leaving. Law enforcement authorities in other states may not be familiar with Iowa's 60-day grace period and issue you a traffic ticket under the belief you're illegally driving with an expired license.

Reinstate License Without Additional Testing

Visit your local DOT location with:

  • Proper identification.
  • Your expired drivers license, if available.
  • Cash or a check to pay all applicable driver license renewal fees.
You'll also be required to pass a vision test.

Reinstate License With Additional Testing

Bring to your local DOT office:

You'll also be required to pass a vision screening and a written test.

To prepare for the written test, study the state's drivers manual. You can download a copy from the DOT's website, or, if prefer studying with a hardcopy, grab one from any DOT office. After studying the manual in its entirety, take at least one online practice test.

After you pass both tests, you'll then need to pass a license test.
