Scheduling Your Iowa Driving Test

Check with your DOT license test site before arriving. Most operate on a first-come-first-serve basis, while a select few do require calling ahead for a driving test appointment.

Taking the Driver License Test

Before you can take a driving test, you must pass a vision screening and a written test. To prepare for the written test, study the state's drivers manual (available online or at any DOT office) and take at least one online practice test.

Get as much driving experience as possible before taking the license test. Practice all driving situations, including highway travel, turning at light-controlled intersections, and driving in reverse.

When you arrive for your license test, have with you:

  • A permit, if applicable.
  • Another licensed driver, if applicable.
  • A working vehicle with proof of registration and insurance. Have at the ready your registration receipt and insurance card.
If you pass you'll be issued a temporary license. Your permanent IA drivers license will be mailed to you within several weeks.
