What documents are required to obtain a Kansas drivers license? Kansas

Documents Required to Get Your Kansas Drivers License

The Kansas Department of Revenue (DOR) requires that all drivers who apply to receive a drivers license in the state provide documents that prove their citizenship, residency, and age. Drivers who relocate to Kansas (KS) as well as drivers who are born in the state must satisfy the documentation requirements.

If you are younger than 16 years old, your parents or legal guardians are required to sign your driver license application. Drivers who are 18 years of age or older do not have to get parental consent to practice driving in KS or to take the license test.

Acceptable documents that prove that you are a United States citizen are:

  • United States passport
  • Official citizenship or naturalization certificates
  • Military identification card
Documents that DOR accepts as proof of your residency and age include:

  • High school transcripts
  • Paycheck stub
  • State income tax return form
  • Recent utility bill
  • Mortgage or rental agreement papers
  • Birth certificate

Teen Driving Logs and License Tests

If you are a teen driver who is younger than 16 years old, you must complete a Teen Driving Log. You can download the log off the KS DOR website.

Each time you practice driving (you must drive at night and during the day for a minimum of 50 hours), fill in the date and time that you drove on the Teen Driving Log. Bring the log with you to a DMV office when you are ready to take your driving test.

All KS residents who apply for a license are encouraged to read the KS driver’s manual thoroughly. You can pick up a copy of the manual at the DMV or download a copy at the DOR website. Take practice test with a friend or relative so that you are prepared to pass both the written and the driving test.

Although an appointment is not required to take the written or driving portions of the license test, you can avoid long lines by arriving at the DMV office early. Wednesdays and Thursdays between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. are amongst the best times to visit the DMV.
