Do I have to take a license test or driving test to obtain a KS drivers license? Kansas

New Driver Checklist

Kansas Drivers License Test Requirements

The Kansas Department of Revenue (DOR) requires that all residents take a driving test or a road test before they receive their drivers license. You will take the driving test after you pass the written and vision portions of the license test.

Download a copy of the current Kansas (KS) driver’s manual at the DOR website. You can also visit the nearest Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office to pick up a copy of the manual.

Take practice tests based on the material in the manual with a relative or friend. The manual is about 70 pages long. Areas covered on the actual written and driving test are included in the manual. You might even want to take a couple of practice tests to prepare for the real written exam.

An appointment is not required to take the written and driving tests. Driving skills covered on the driving test include:

  • Parking on flat surfaces and hills.
  • Traffic signs and signals.
  • Driving with a clutch.
  • Braking.
  • Hand signals.
  • Defensive Driving.

Just Moved to Kansas?

Should you relocate to KS (and have a valid out-of-state license) you do not have to take practice test, written test, or a driving test to receive your KS driver license. If your out-of-state license is expired for longer than one year, you must take the road test to receive your driver license.
